Protecting marriage from the beginning
The Marriage Covenant Contracts seeks to collaboratively develop legal documents that can be used in place of a government marriage license that will protect a Catholic marriage and the rights of the spouses.
A marriage contract can:
Clearly define the vows of the marriage and the rights and duties of each spouse within the marriage
Deny marital assets to a spouse who breaks the marriage vows
Provide remedies to repair the marriage if the vows are broken
Discourage divorce and encourage the keeping of the marriage vows
The document below is given as a general example of a marriage contract. For a marriage contract to be enforceable, it needs to be adapted to the laws of the state in which the marriage takes place.
We welcome your feedback.
Please have any legal documents reviewed by an attorney who is familiar with the laws in your state.
If you have had a Catholic marriage contract reviewed by an attorney, reviewed by your Diocese, or have signed a Catholic marriage contract, we would love to hear about it so we can improve the information on this website.
